"Urchin” by Sonya Philip

Mixed media with needlework, watercolor and ink on paper, newly framed in solid natural wood.

California, USA

10 x 13"

New.

Sonya Philip was born in the Phillipines, her father is Australian and her mother is Filipino. As a self-taught artist, she enjoys the freedom of exploring and stretching mediums. Disruption and identity play a large role in her work. Philip is a knitter. Her path started with macrame and sewing as a child, but knitting was the lingua franca she found in her twenties. The needle arts, traditionally associated with domesticity, are at once a display of femininity and a feminist statement. Philip states, "I have always straddled different worlds, whether through my mixed-race heritage or the mutually demanding roles of mother and artist." Philip has an MFA in creative writing from Mills College and lives in San Francisco with her family.
