This 1957 pastel on paper abstract is estate stamped in the lower right by New York/San Francisco artist Gary L. Shaffer (1936-2001). Shaffer trained with the important abstract expressionist, Hans Hoffman, in the late 1950s and became an influential member of the Printmakers' Workshop in Manhattan. This piece comes form his sketchbooks dating from that influential period. Shaffer moved to San Francisco in the late 1970s. His works are in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Institute of Arts, amongst many others. Framed in a restored thin vintage wood frame with distressed silver finish over black using warm white archival matting behind conservation clear glass.

Hand-picked by Serena & Lily from Lost Art Salon's Collection, a renowned San Francisco-based resource for original 20th century works of modernist, vintage, antique, and contemporary art. We like to think of the Lost Art Salon pieces chosen for our Serena & Lily Art Collection as being “twice curated”.
